o S.F.-Based Stellar Labs Lands $26.3 Million in First Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Stellar Labs, the San Francisco-based developer of a flight operations management, commercial management and global distribution system for business aviation, said on Thursday it has landed $26.3 million in its first round of funding. Columbia Equity Partners led the round, which also included participation from Global Jet Capital and Expa. Together with previous equity funding from Rockwell Collins, the company said it will invest more than $50 million in its business aviation technology platform. "When we founded Stellar in 2014, the industry basically ran on technology built before the internet era," said co-founders David Fox and Paul Touw, in a statement. "In commercial aviation, innovations in advanced technologies drove ticket prices down 73% and increased access to regional communities over the last two decades. We believe similar efficiency gains can be achieved in business aviation." Stellar, in partnership with Rockwell Collins, is developing a unified, cloud-based operating platform that will combine flight operations planning functionality of the ARINCDirect flight operations system) with its own distribution systems and commercial operations technology.

o San Jose-Based NeoPhotonics to Cut Workforce Amid Slow Sales in China

San Jose, Calif. -- Looking to recover from lower-than-expected sales in China, San Jose-based NeoPhotonics, a maker of optoelectronic components for high speed communications networks, said on Thursday it plans to cut an unspecified number of employees as part of a corporate restructuring program. The company also plans to consolidate some facilities and write down inventory for certain assets. NeoPhotonics said the moves will help lower its break-even point as it bids to return to profitability, while allowing the company to maintain its core capabilities focused on datacenter interconnect and telecommunications systems. "Lacking a clear indication of increased demand in China in the third quarter, we initiated several operational changes with the goal of expediting our return to profitability, including implementing certain restructuring initiatives designed to align our business with the current demand environment and lowering manufacturing output to manage inventory levels," said Tim Jenks, the chairman and CEO of NeoPhotonics. The company said the moves will reduce quarterly operating expenses by approximately $2 million.

o Facebook to Build $750 Million Data Center in Virginia

Richmond, Va. -- Social media giant Facebook plans to build a $750 million data center near Richmond, Va., the state announced Thursday. The 970,000-square-foot facility will be located in the White Oak Technology Park, near Richmond International Airport. Multiple solar facilities, to be paid for through a new renewable energy tariff designed by Dominion Energy Virginia and Facebook, will power the data center. The facility will house more than 100 full-time operational employees, with over a thousand workers expected to take part in the construction. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said he met with company officials about the project on multiple occasions, most recently during his San Francisco marketing mission earlier this week. Menlo Park-based Facebook cited numerous reasons for selecting Virginia for the project. "When considering new data center locations, we not only look for clean and renewable energy solutions, but great partnerships within the local community, a strong pool of local talent, excellent access to fiber and a robust electric grid," said Rachel Peterson, the company's director of data center strategy. "Henrico County and the Commonwealth of Virginia has it all." Facebook began building its own data centers in 2010, and currently operates facilities in Oregon, North Carolina, Iowa and Sweden, with plans in the works for several others.

o Aircraft-Giant Boeing to Acquire Aurora Flight Sciences

Mountain View, Calif. -- Aurora Flight Sciences, a Virginia-based developer of advanced aerospace platforms with offices in Mountain View, said on Thursday it has signed a deal to be acquired by aircraft-giant Boeing. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close shortly, were not disclosed. The acquisition gives Boeing key autonomous systems technologies that will be used in future aerospace applications and vehicles. "As an integral part of Boeing, our pioneered technologies of long-endurance aircraft, robotic co-pilots and autonomous electric VTOLs will be transitioned into world-class products," said John Langford, Aurora's founder and CEO. Aurora has designed, produced and flown more than 30 unmanned air vehicles since the company was founded in 1989. The company leverages autonomous systems that include perception, machine learning and advanced flight control systems. Aurora, which has more than 550 employees, will become a unit of Boeing Engineering Test & Technology, continuing to operate independently.
